Assessments & Reports

Understanding your child's everyday support needs

Functional Capacity Assessments

A comprehensive assessment of how a child or young person manages everyday activities across home, school and community settings — considering both strengths and the assistance, supervision or environmental support they require to participate safely and consistently.

Our FCAs look beyond whether a child can physically complete a task. We consider what they can manage consistently in everyday life, the prompting or support required, environmental barriers, and the impact on family and participation.

The assessment may include parent and caregiver consultation, review of existing information, standardised assessments, a session with your child where appropriate, liaison with other professionals, and a comprehensive written report with recommendations and a feedback session.

Assessments can be completed largely online where appropriate. At least one in-person appointment may be recommended when direct observation would strengthen the available evidence.

The NDIA makes the final decision about eligibility and funded supports. An FCA cannot guarantee a particular funding outcome.

Complex Functional Capacity Assessment

A comprehensive functional assessment for children and young people with more complex support needs, where a greater level of assessment, evidence review, liaison and clinical analysis is required.

A Complex Functional Capacity Assessment may be appropriate where a child has multiple areas of functional difficulty, several diagnoses or co-occurring needs, significant reliance on family or other supports, multiple professionals involved in their care, or where their functional presentation cannot be adequately understood through a standard assessment alone.

Assessment is individualised and may include:

  • detailed parent and child interviews

  • assessment across self-care, self-management, communication, learning, mobility and social participation

  • executive functioning and everyday cognitive demands

  • sensory processing and regulation where relevant

  • school and community participation

  • level and frequency of prompting, supervision and assistance required

  • impact on informal supports and family capacity

  • review of previous assessments, reports and supporting evidence

  • relevant standardised functional assessments

  • liaison with treating professionals, school or other supports where clinically appropriate

  • identification of environmental barriers and supports

  • detailed clinical analysis

  • recommendations regarding ongoing therapy, supports, assistive technology or other services where appropriate

  • a comprehensive written Functional Capacity Assessment report.

Our assessments consider the difference between being physically capable of completing an activity and being able to initiate, organise and complete that activity independently, consistently and safely in everyday life.

The scope and time required for a Complex Functional Capacity Assessment varies according to the individual child. Families will be provided with an estimate before proceeding.

Focused Functional Assessment

For families who need assessment of a specific area of functioning without a full FCA. May focus on self-care, daily routines, independence, executive functioning, school participation, sensory needs or community participation.

Sensory Processing Assessment

Explores a child’s individual sensory preferences and differences and how these may affect their comfort, regulation and participation in everyday activities.

Assessment may include the Sensory Profile, parent interview, clinical observation and practical recommendations for home, school or kinder.

Executive Functioning Assessment

For children and adolescents experiencing difficulty with starting tasks, planning, organisation, working memory, time awareness, transitions, completing routines or managing multi-step activities.

Assessment focuses on how executive functioning differences affect everyday participation and independence and provides practical recommendations.

School Participation Assessment

Explores factors affecting a child or young person’s ability to participate in school.

This may include attention and executive functioning, sensory needs, classroom demands, organisation, transitions, fine motor skills, emotional regulation, attendance, independence and environmental supports.

Recommendations are individualised and focused on making school participation more accessible and sustainable.

Daily Living Skills Assessment

Looks at a child or young person’s independence and support needs across everyday activities such as dressing, showering, grooming, toileting, eating, morning and evening routines, household tasks and managing belongings.

Importantly, assessment considers not only whether the child can physically perform a task, but the prompting, supervision, preparation and support required for them to complete it consistently.

Fine Motor & Handwriting Assessment

Assessment of functional fine motor and written-work skills, which may include pencil control, handwriting, speed, legibility, fatigue, scissor skills, bilateral coordination and use of classroom tools.

Play & Participation Assessment

For younger children experiencing difficulties participating in play, kinder or everyday activities. May explore independent and shared play, flexibility, interaction with others, regulation, transitions and sensory preferences. Neuro-affirming in approach — focused on understanding the child, not teaching them to play a particular way.

Toileting & Self-Care Assessment

For children experiencing difficulty developing independence with toileting or personal care routines. Considers sensory preferences, body awareness, routines, environment, motor skills, communication and the level of support currently required.

Occupational Performance & Support Needs Assessment

For families who know their child is struggling but aren't sure where to start. A broader assessment of everyday functioning across self-care, routines, regulation, executive functioning, play, school and family priorities. Includes recommendations about next steps and whether input from another professional may be helpful.

OT Progress & Recommendations Report

A formal review of a child's current goals, progress, functional needs and ongoing therapy priorities. Useful when circumstances have changed, updated information is required, or families want to formally review whether current goals remain appropriate.

Assistive Technology & Equipment Assessment

Assessment and recommendations for selected assistive technology, equipment and environmental supports within the scope of our paediatric OT service.
