Parent Coaching

Supporting you to understand your child—and feel more confident supporting them.

Independence

Over time, they rely less on us because we've helped build the skills they need.

Parenting doesn't come with a manual, and every child is different.

If you're feeling exhausted, questioning yourself, or wondering "Why isn't this strategy working?", you're not alone.

Parent coaching at Move Play Learn isn't about telling you how to parent. It's about working alongside you to better understand your child, strengthen your relationship, and develop practical strategies that genuinely fit your family.

Because children don't need perfect parents—they need adults who feel supported, informed and connected.

Why parent coaching?

Children spend around 50 minutes a fortnight in therapy, but they spend thousands of hours with you.

The biggest changes don't happen because of one therapy session each week. They happen through the everyday moments—getting dressed, leaving the house, navigating big emotions, bedtime routines, homework, sibling disagreements and family life.

Parent coaching helps turn those everyday moments into opportunities for connection, learning and growth.

Understanding your child's behaviour

Behaviour is communication.

When children and young people feel safe, connected and understood, they're more able to learn, problem-solve and regulate their emotions.

Instead of asking:

"How do I stop this behaviour?"

We'll often explore:

  • What is my child trying to communicate?

  • What need are they expressing?

  • What might they need from me right now?

  • How can I support them without losing myself in the process?

Understanding the "why" behind behaviour often changes everything.

Co-regulation: Before children can regulate themselves, they borrow us.

Children aren't born knowing how to manage frustration, disappointment, excitement or worry.

They learn through repeated experiences of being supported by calm, connected adults.

This is called co-regulation.

Co-regulation doesn't mean removing every challenge or saying yes to everything.

It means offering enough safety, connection and support that your child can gradually build the skills to regulate independently over time.

As children grow, our role shifts—but connection remains at the centre.

Emotional Wi-Fi

Think of your relationship like emotional Wi-Fi.

Children are constantly checking whether they're connected to the adults they trust.

When that connection feels strong, they have a secure base from which to explore, learn, recover from mistakes and manage challenges.

When the connection weakens—because they're overwhelmed, anxious, tired or disconnected—they often need help reconnecting before they're able to solve problems or hear instructions.

Sometimes the most powerful intervention isn't finding the perfect consequence.

It's reconnecting first.

What does a parent coaching session look like?

Every session is different because every family is different.

Together we might:

  • unpack a difficult week

  • celebrate what's already working

  • understand patterns you're noticing

  • problem-solve everyday situations

  • explore why strategies have or haven't worked

  • develop practical supports tailored to your family

  • adjust strategies as your child grows and their needs change

You'll leave with a clearer understanding of your child and practical ideas you can begin using straight away.

You already know your child better than anyone else.

My role isn't to tell you how to parent.

It's to help you understand what's happening beneath the surface, build confidence in your own instincts, and support you to respond in ways that strengthen your relationship with your child.

When parents feel supported, children do too.
