Mental Wellbeing

Supporting children and young people to understand themselves, build confidence and participate in everyday life.

Ready to take the first step?

Mental wellbeing isn't just about whether a child feels happy or sad.

It influences how they learn, make friends, manage emotions, cope with challenges and participate in the everyday activities that matter most.

At Move Play Learn, we support children and young people to better understand themselves, recognise their strengths and develop practical strategies that help them thrive at home, at school and in the community.

Because mental wellbeing isn't about "fixing" children.

It's about helping them feel safe, connected, capable and understood.

Occupational therapy helps remove barriers so children can participate in the activities that are meaningful to them.

Mental wellbeing is part of everyday life

Mental wellbeing doesn't exist separately from everyday occupations—it influences everything children do.

When a child is anxious, overwhelmed or emotionally exhausted, it can affect:

Every behaviour has a story

Children don't always have the words to explain what's happening inside.

Instead, they show us.

Big emotions, withdrawal, perfectionism, avoidance, shutting down, anger or refusing school are often signs that a child is struggling—not choosing to make life difficult.

Together, we'll work to understand what's underneath those behaviours so we can respond with curiosity, compassion and practical support.

Because behaviour is communication.

Understanding Masking

Many neurodivergent children and young people spend enormous amounts of energy trying to fit in, meet expectations or hide parts of themselves to avoid standing out.

This is often called masking.

Although masking may look like coping on the outside, it can come at a significant emotional cost, contributing to anxiety, exhaustion, burnout and reduced self-esteem.

Therapy isn't about teaching children to mask more effectively.

It's about helping them better understand themselves, communicate their needs, advocate for appropriate supports and feel safe being authentically themselves.

Working Together

The people around a child make an enormous difference.

With your consent, therapy may involve working collaboratively with parents, teachers, educators, psychologists, speech pathologists, paediatricians and other professionals to create consistent supports across environments.

Children do best when the important adults in their lives work together.

Therapy isn't about changing who your child is

We don't measure success by how "typical" a child appears.

Success looks different for every child.

It might be making a friend.

Going to school with less distress.

Trying something new.

Understanding their emotions.

Asking for help.

Feeling proud of who they are.

Participating in everyday life with confidence.

You don't need to have all the answers.

If you're noticing changes in your child's confidence, emotions, participation or overall wellbeing—but you're not sure where to start—we'd love to help.

Sometimes the first step is simply having a conversation.

Together, we'll explore what's happening, answer your questions and decide whether occupational therapy is the right fit for your child.
